The Institute for Justice and Reconciliation Mourns the Passing of Jan Hofmeyr, Head of Policy and Research
It is with deep sadness and a profound sense of loss that the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) announces the passing of our esteemed colleague and friend, Jan Hofmeyr, who served as Programme Head: Policy and Research.
Jan was a gifted futurist and socio-political analyst, deeply committed to the advancement of justice, good governance, and democracy across the African continent. For many years, he spearheaded critical research and policy initiatives at IJR, championing evidence-based approaches to transitional justice, reconciliation, and inclusive governance.
A pillar of our organisation, Jan was part of IJR’s core management team and served on the executive committee of the Afrobarometer Network, Africa’s most authoritative continental research project on democracy and governance. His intellectual leadership, mentorship, unwavering integrity and kindness and generosity have left an indelible mark on IJR and all those whom he has worked with in South Africa, Africa and further abroad.
Jan’s passing is an immeasurable loss to all who had the privilege of working alongside him, learning from him, and being inspired by his vision for a more just and peaceful world.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched.
