Human Rights Day Message: 21 March 2025

By Published On: 20th March 2025

As we mark Human Rights Day this March under the theme “Deepening a Culture of Social Justice and Human Rights,” we also celebrate a significant milestone — the 25th anniversary of the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation. For a quarter of a century, we have been at the forefront of promoting human rights, peacebuilding, and social justice in South Africa and across the African continent.

In South Africa, the struggle for human rights has been shaped by the painful legacy of colonialism and apartheid, resulting in a progressive constitution that upholds equality, dignity, and freedom. Yet, the struggle is far from over. Issues such as gender-based violence, inequality, and xenophobia continue to threaten these hard-won rights. Across Africa, many countries face complex challenges, including political instability, conflict, and limited access to justice. Despite these obstacles, we are guided by the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, striving to protect and promote human rights across the continent.

Given recent global developments, it appears that human rights are increasingly under threat, with rising discrimination, repression of dissent, and restricted freedoms. These ongoing challenges demand unwavering advocacy, accountability, and international cooperation to safeguard universal rights.

At the IJR, we remain committed to advancing human rights, fostering reconciliation, and building inclusive societies where justice and dignity are realised for all. We firmly believe that human rights are fundamental entitlements that every individual deserves, regardless of nationality, race, gender, or background, a belief enshrined in the South African Constitution. Reflecting on our journey, we reaffirm our dedication to creating inclusive, just, and democratic societies for future generations.

As we deepen our efforts to strengthen the conflict management and peacebuilding capacities of communities, civil society organisations, governments, and intergovernmental bodies, we remain steadfast in our mission to advance social cohesion, reconciliation, and peace on the continent.

This Human Rights Day, we invite all partners and communities to join us in nurturing a culture of social justice and human rights. Together, we can continue shaping a future where dignity, equality, and peace prevail.
