Winter School Invitation: Ukraine and Southern African Strategic Futures 4-6 August 2026

The Ukrainian Association of South Africa (UAZA), the Institute of Justice and Reconciliation (IJR), the University of Pretoria, the University of Cape Town, and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in South Africa have the honour of inviting you to participate in the Winter School on Ukraine and Southern African Strategic Futures (Winter School), which will take place as follows:

Dates: 4–6 August 2026
Venue: Western Cape, South Africa

More information: https://www.uaza.co.za/facilitating-cooperation/ukrainian-african-academic-winter-school/

The Winter School is an in-person event that aims to bring Southern African and Ukrainian academics together to engage in discussions on topics of common interest and to build a network of individuals interested in cooperation and in promoting further connections between Ukrainian and South African academics.

The primary participants are academics and think-tank researchers who collaborate with Ukrainian academics or think tanks, as well as those researching topics related to Ukraine or interested in introducing Ukraine-related case studies into their teaching. PhD students whose research is linked to Ukraine are also encouraged to apply.

During the Winter School, participants will engage in workshops and discussions that bridge cultural, historical, and security perspectives to support long-term dialogue. The Winter School is structured around three simultaneous streams:

  • Ukraine and Southern African Futures in the Current World Disorder (for International Relations, Politics, and Security Studies researchers)
  • Understanding the Past for a Better Future (History, Art, Decolonial Studies, and related fields)
  • Human Rights, Accountability, and Democracy (Human Rights and International Law)

In addition to lectures and discussions, the programme will include practical workshops on Ukrainian culture, language, and understanding academic life during the war.

We would appreciate it if you could RSVP by 1 June 2026.
