About three-fifths of South Africans say Eskom must be privatised to ensure an effective supply of electricity in the country, a new Afrobarometer survey indicates. An even greater proportion of citizens believe that the government monopoly on electricity provision should be ended to allow other actors to generate and distribute power in South Africa.
Cape Town, Monday, 13 February 2023 – “Bergsig” is a documentary film about the problematic “coloured” identity in South Africa and the lasting legacies of apartheid on young people in the country. The documentary is named after a township area created for “coloured” people in Calitzdorp and attempts- through film- to combat the misrepresentation and erasure of “coloured” people from the history of the town.
An Afrobarometer delegation, including Board Chair E. Gyimah-Boadi, CEO Joseph Asunka, Director of Analysis Carolyn Logan, and Chief Operating Officer Felix Biga is in Washington, D.C., this week for a series of high-level engagements. In partnership with the U.S. Institute of Peace, the delegation will meet Tuesday with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for a briefing session on Afrobarometer findings on governance, democracy, climate change, health, COVID-19, and poverty. Meetings with the U.S. State Department and the Center for Strategic and International Studies are scheduled on Wednesday.

The Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) mourns the passing of its patron, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Mpilo Tutu. Archbishop Tutu has been associated with the IJR since its inception in 2000. The Archbishop was to be part of the founding of the IJR in the wake of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission and has remained an inspiration to the organisation over the years.
