The Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) mourns the passing of its patron, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Mpilo Tutu. Archbishop Tutu has been associated with the IJR since its inception in 2000. The Archbishop was to be part of the founding of the IJR in the wake of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission and has remained an inspiration to the organisation over the years.

Throughout his life he lived the values of his faith, never deviating from his principles. Through the evils of apartheid, he led with compassion and humility, shining a light on the injustice and inequities of the then government, not only in South Africa, but also in the broader international community. He never wavered in his quest for justice and reconciliation. Navigating the difficult terrain of post-apartheid South Africa, he continued to speak truth to power whether it was to bring to light the atrocities of the past, or to implore the government to address present injustices. Archbishop Tutu also decried the continuing marginalisation of the LGBTQIAP+ community and the ongoing violence against foreigners, women, and children in South Africa.

At a time when South Africa needed it most, he was our moral compass. His life, wisdom and humour will continue to inspire us to bring about the country and the world he worked so hard to achieve.
