Statement by the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation on the Situation in Sudan
The Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) expresses its grave concern over the escalating conflict and humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Sudan. The devastating violence has claimed tens of thousands lives, displaced millions, and left communities shattered by insecurity, hunger, and the collapse of essential services. We are concerned about the grave gender-based violations and their effects on the women and girls in Sudan.
As an organisation committed to advancing peace, justice, and reconciliation across Africa, we are deeply alarmed by the suffering of civilians and the erosion of prospects for a stable and democratic Sudan. The ongoing conflict not only threatens the immediate survival of Sudanese communities but also undermines long-term efforts toward healing, reconciliation, inclusive governance, and sustainable peace.
We call upon the African Union (AU) to urgently exercise its mandate to protect peace and security on the continent. The AU must intensify its diplomatic, political, and humanitarian interventions to:
- Facilitate an immediate cessation of hostilities and ensure safe humanitarian access;
- Support inclusive dialogue among Sudanese stakeholders to lay the foundation for a political settlement;
- Address transitional justice issues, including accountability for atrocities, reparations for victims, and guarantees of non-recurrence;
- Strengthen regional and international cooperation to prevent further destabilisation of the Horn of Africa.
The people of Sudan deserve a future free from violence, marked by justice, dignity, and reconciliation. The African Union, together with the broader international community, must act decisively to end the suffering and help Sudan embark on a path toward peace and democratic transition.
