The Human Sciences Research Council’s Africa Institute of South Africa (AISA) and the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) invite the public and members of the media to the second edition of the two-part seminar series on the Zimbabwe elections.
The seminar titled Zimbabwe Decides 2023: Issues and Prospects will be held at the HSRC Building in Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town and Sweetwaters, on Wednesday, 13 September 2023 from 9h30.
The dialogue will focus on the SADC Election Observer Mission’s preliminary report, which indicated that the elections had not met the national and regional standards for free, fair, and credible elections.
Part one of the dialogue series saw lengthy deliberations on the matter of free, fair, and credible elections. The second part will delve deeper into the post-election analysis.
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) announced that the incumbent, Emmerson Mnangagwa, of the ZANU-PF had won the August 23 presidential elections with roughly 53% of the vote, but the opposition questioned the result.
The commission further indicated that Nelson Chamisa, who leads the opposition Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) party, secured 44% of the presidential vote.
The seminar will bring together multiple participants, including diplomats, academics, researchers, think tanks and civil society organisations who have an interest in overseeing a peaceful and credible electoral process that may potentially unlock the economic logjam that Zimbabwe is currently in.
