Media Statement on the Passing of Stanley Henkeman
It is with profound sadness that the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) announces the passing of its executive director, Mr Stanley Henkeman yesterday afternoon, the 18th of December 2020, following complications related to the Covid-19 virus.
Stan made an enormous contribution to the Institute, first as Programme Head of its Building an Inclusive Society Programme and later as its executive director. During this period, he succeeded in solidifying the leading role that the IJR plays in justice and reconciliation processes in South Africa and elsewhere on the continent. He was particularly passionate about stressing the pursuit of social justice as a prerequisite for reconciliation in divided societies.
During his tenure at IJR, Stan’s kindness and humanity made a deep impression on all of us, and we will miss him dearly. His legacy and passion for the IJR’s vision of building fair, democratic, and inclusive societies will continue to inspire the Institute in years to come.
The IJR board chairperson, Glenda Wildschut, said, “Stan had a great passion for justice and reconciliation especially through his work and collaboration with global organizations in this field. Stan was recognised both here and abroad as a highly-skilled and competent mediator and used these skills so ably in the work of IJR.”
Stan started his career in teaching and never lost his love for knowledge, teaching and most importantly, people. Before joining IJR, Stan was employed by Operation Hope and the Centre for Conflict Resolution. He held a MA in Religious Studies from the University of Cape Town, a BA Hons in Biblical Studies from the University of the Western Cape and a Teachers Diploma.
Our deepest condolences go to Sharon, his wife and children, Luke, Joshua and Aaron, and his extended family. We wish them strength during this very sad period.

This is such a dramatic and tragic loss. I’m deeply shocked. Stan was an example and and inspiration to many. His drive and humanity will be missed. Wishing his loved ones the strength to carry this burden.
Stan has made an indelible impression on all of us and he will be sorely be missed. His contribution to the IJR, SA and internationally has touched the hearts and lives of many as he strived to build fair, democratic and inclusive societies whenever and wherever he had the opportunity. His belief that there can never be true reconciliation without justice permeated every aspect of his life and work. He was indeed a man of the people but above all he was a man of God. Long may his life live on in the hearts and minds of us all. Till we meet again, rest in peace my friend and my brother.
We are deeply saddened to hear about Stan’s passing. We wish Stan’s family and the IJR team peace, comfort and courage to face the days ahead and many loving memories of his gentle soul to forever hold in your hearts.
This is an event and a loss so dreadful that it is hard to think what to say. Stan led the IJR with insight, knowledge, skill and courtesy and with respect for and interest in every member of staff. It took me one meeting to love the man. 2020 has been a nightmare from start to finish, and is ending with a terrible body blow..
Such sad news for all of us working for reconciliation and learning from his insight and buyoed by his infectious smile. Heartfelt condolences to family and friends.
