Learning to Live with Difference-Religion, Identity and Violence in the Western Cape
This project investigated some of the root causes of the global increase of inter-group violence, focusing primarily, but not exclusively on religion. It drew on insights from social scientists, political analysts and religious practitioners to explore both the destructive and positive dimensions of identity formation – not least in states suffering or recovering from inter-group conflict.

The project will honour all those who have participated in the struggle for freedom and democracy in South Africa. The project will compile life stories of activists across ideological confines reflecting the diverse number of organisations, groups and individuals who contributed to the attainment of freedom. Furthermore, it will provide forums to debate and explore the struggles of the past with the view of contributing to the shaping of democracy in South Africa. The compilation of a database containing the names and contact details of those who participated in the struggle for freedom and democracy is on-going. We are in the process of interviewing and writing life histories of former activists (alphabetical list below). We acknowledge that this list is incomplete and urge former activists to please forward names and contact details of activists who should be interviewed.

The development of strategically located story-telling imbizo’s designed to encourage South Africans of all political persuasions to share their experiences and those of people known to them in the struggle for democracy. During 2004, story-telling imbizo’s on Grassroots Community Newspaper and on the Ways Faith Communities cooperated in the Struggle for Democracy, were held.

Perpetrator Studies
This project sought to understand the motives and perspectives of perpetrators from all sides of South Africa's past political struggle. The understanding of what drove individuals to commit human rights violations provided information that deepend and challenged current knowldge of how political contexts influence individuals decisions. This research shed light on the complex interplay between individual choice and the political pressures that influence their decision making process.
