Turning Points Series

The Turning Points in History publication of 2004 represents a milestone effort to address the challenges involved in education for reconciliation. Already enlisted as a recommended teaching resource in most provinces, the series has attracted widespread attention in media and educational circles.

There are various reasons for its positive reception in schools (as teaching resources) as well as in FET colleges and universities (for teacher training and curriculum development programmes) across South Africa:

  • Timing: There is an urgent need for materials and teaching resources. The Turning Points series, with its fresh content and highly developed methodological assistance in the Teacher's Guide and teaching modules on the accompanying CD-Rom Publication, provides a unique opportunity for teachers to come to grips with the National Curriculum Statement's required new content and methodologies.
  • Scope: The Publication represents the first post-apartheid effort to present an overview of South African history, written from multiple prespectives, to schools.
  • Presentation: The books are exceptionally attractive, lively and well laid out. They contain extensive illustrations, glossaries and sources, enabling teachers to prepare in-depth lessons.
  • Training and Support: The Institute is in the process of conducting a series of inter-provincial  training seminars involving each teaching district in the country. The aim is to provide teachers, advisers and managers with hands-on training experience of the Turning Points material and the ways that the NCS requires history to be taught.
  • Translation: Consistent requests for translating the Turning Points materials into Afrikaans (for purposes of final FET examination preparations) have led to the translation and posting on the Institute website of a hundred pages of teaching modules from the Turning Points CD-Rom.
