Teaching Resources

The Institute has produced a number of handbooks and teaching resources that have emerged out of its work. These include resources to assist people engaging in community interventions as well as formal and informal education initiatives.

THE THIRD IN A SERIES OF EXCITING RESOURCE GUIDES: STORIES OP DIE WIND – ‘n Noord-Kaapse Erfenis (Stories that float on the Wind – A Northern Cape Heritage). This Resource Guide focuses on folk tales as an important element of intangible heritage of the Northern Cape and contains examples of different lesson plans to be used in the classroom. Learners from eight Northern Cape schools Kharkhams, F.J. Smit, Steinkopf, Namaqualand , Concordia, Okiep. Kakamas and Rietfontein were trained in Oral History Methodology and Techniques and Writing skills. They interviewed a number of story-tellers from their respective communities.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission brought home to most South Africans the extent to which apartheid left many communities traumatised and dysfunctional. Communities face the challenges of improving their lives materially and economically, as well as creating neighbourhoods where people feel safe and at home. This book is the result of a series of initiatives by the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation to begin to address issues of collective trauma and healing. Over seven years, many of what is involved: Lingelihle, Cradock, Qumbu, Langa, Laingsburg, Bonteheuwel, Hout Bay, Gugulethu, Khayelitsha and Pinelands.

Community Healing: A Guide for Facilitators :R50

In post-apartheid South Africa, healing depends on more than material well-being. Attention must also be given to the socio-psychological dimension of healing at individual and collective levels. In 2001, the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) took the bold step of tackling the issue of community healing. An innovative project in Cradock in the Eastern Cape Province was initiated by Nyameka Goniwe, a community leader and project manager with the Institute. The project helped the Institute to develop broad guidelines for community healing. Through Nyameka’s intervention, the people of Cradock worked towards healing, by dealing with the impact of apartheid in their community.

Turning Points in History Series

Turning Points in History Series

The Turning Points history series initiated by the Institute deals with crucial stages in the development of South African society. In cooperation with the National Education Department the Institute has drawn on the expertise of a number of leading South African historians. Their essays, published in six eighty-page booklets and a teacher’s guide, are aimed at secondary school level. This material will be further used to encourage the broader South African public to reflect on the recent South African (apartheid) conflict within the context of larger historical movements over centuries. This series forms an integral part of the Institute’s commitment to telling the stories that detail South Africa’s complex past.
