Community Building in Uncertain Times
In a world increasingly defined by social fragmentation—political volatility, social disconnection, and economic insecurity—relationship-building may seem too slow, too soft, and immeasurable. But in my work across various communities in South Africa, I have come to understand it as the only real foundation for peace, safety, and community transformation.
This practice note explores relationship-building not as a vague ideal, but as a deliberate and radical methodology. Drawing on scholars and practitioners such as Cormac Russell and John McKnight (The Connected Community, 2022), Peter Block (Community: The Structure of Belonging, 2018), Zach Norris (We Keep Us Safe, 2020), and Kelly Hayes and Mariame Kaba (Let This Radicalize You, 2023), as well as insights from the Sustained Dialogues programme, this paper argues that sustainable community development cannot occur without relationships of trust, reciprocity, and presence.
