Gangqwana Junior
School opening
October 2004
Building Schools is not Institute core business. In the course of our
community work in the Gangqwana, in the deep rural Eastern Cape
(Transkei), we were however confronted with a mud brick community
school that had totally collapsed. We responded, the Eastern Cape
Education Department co-operated, local folk did the building, friends
of the Institute raised the money, Shepard Mayatula, chairperson of the
Education and Training portfolio committee in the National Assembly put
us in touch with the Adopt-a-School project. On 8 October the
three-classroom school was officially opened by the MEC for Education
in the Eastern Cape, Mr Mkhangeli Matomela and Dr Spiwo Xapile, a Board
member of the Institute. Despite the progress made by government, there
is a backlog of over 10 000 schools needing to be built. We built the
Gangqwana school for less than R 200 000. Click

dislocation, deprivation and environmental degradation that are the
grim results of increasingly rapid urbanisation. Cape Town
Partnership's Andrew Boraine and Cosatu's Mike Louw led the debate.
This was the fourth in a series of symposia hosted by the Institute for
