The Schools' Oral History Project

Platforms to share narratives about past and present experiences in South Africa are paramount to the cultivation of an inclusive national identity. This project utilises oral history methodology to promote reconciliation amongst communities through different educational contexts. It creates safe spaces to explore and deconstruct contested narratives in order to develop inclusive narratives.

Through these platforms a range of outputs are developed with stakeholders: oral interviews, intergenerational dialogues between learners and other community members, and digital audiovisual material on selected themes. Collectively these culminate in a resource guide for educators. Recordings of oral interviews are donated to local repositories to contribute to the democratisation of archival collections.

2012 Happenings

The SOHP project conducted in Potchefstroom in the North West Province explored how the changing of street and place names as examples of cultural and historical redress impact on reconciliation in the local context. The resource guide for educators which will be launched by end of March, is the final book of the, "Building Blocks for Democracy" series initiated in 2009 in the Eastern Cape town of Cradock and continued in Welkom, Free State in 2010.

Research Paper

A research paper, exploring the use of Oral History to promote reconciliation, will be produced by June 2012.
