Ashley Kriel Youth Programme
Youth leaders today, as in the struggle against apartheid, have a key role to play in the building of a more inclusive future. The project draws its inspiration from young political activists such as Ashley Kriel, Cape Flats youth leader, murdered by the apartheid regime in the 1980s.
In commemoration of the contribution that the youth across South Africa played in the struggle against oppression, exploitation and exclusion on the basis of race, gender and class, the project hosts an annual youth lecture in partnership with the University of the Western Cape.
To this end, the annual Ashley Kriel Memorial Lecture provides a platform to honour past youth leadership, to celebrate current youth achievements in leadership and debate challenges facing the youth.
2012 Happenings
The theme for this year is "Promoting dialogue across divides". The focus will be on unacknowledged patterns of leadership and reconciliation amongst youth who are unemployed, out of school and not part of the formal structures of support. Through research, via debates, focus groups and interviews, we will capture what this sector of our society has to say about relevant social and economic issues such as unemployment, education and reconciliation to name just a few.
