The Institute for Justice and Reconciliation pledges solidarity with the people of Kenya ahead of the forthcoming August 2017 elections
The Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) pledges solidarity with the people of Kenya ahead of the elections on 8th August 2017. Since 2012, IJR has been working with key governmental and civil society actors in Kenya to promote and support peace-building and reconciliation initiatives.
IJR appeals to all of Kenya’s state institutions, mandated to oversee aspects of the polling process across the country, to uphold the principles of integrity and animate the values enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Kenya. We pledge our continuing support to civil society actors who are actively working to ensure that Kenya upholds a free and transparent election.
In appealing to the spirit of Pan-Africanism, the IJR believes that it is not only in the interests of the people of Kenya, but also in Africa’s collective interest, to ensure a transparent, inclusive and peaceful election as the country heads towards the polls.
IJR calls upon the Africa’s regional institutions, including the African Union (AU), East African Community (EAC), and the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), to maintain vigilance as they continue to provide moral support to Kenya ahead of the forthcoming elections.
Africa’s struggle for freedom from the forces that seek to ‘divide and conquer’ will continue well into the twenty-first century. IJR places an emphasis on the value of dialogue and a respect for the principles enshrined in constitutions, as a means for addressing disagreements within our African societies.
The IJR encourages the people of South Africa to reflect on their own experiences of the denial of the right to choose their own leaders under Apartheid, as we come together in solidarity with our fellow Africans in Kenya.
